Mohali: The SAS Nagar police on Tuesday arrested three youths for thrashing one of their own cop after he tried to stop them from fighting near Gurdwara Singh Shaheedan in Sohana two months ago.
A case was registered after a video in which constable Ravinder Singh (21) posted with the police control room (PCR) is seen being thrashed mercilessly by six persons went viral on social messaging app WhatsApp.
Those arrested have been identified as Kuljeet Singh (21), a Class-12 passout, Paramveer Singh (19), who is pursuing graduation and Vakeel Khan (26), a cable operator, all residents of Fatehgarh Sahib.
The three have been booked under sections 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty) and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Sohana station house officer (SHO) Rajan Parwinder said efforts are on to identify the other accused and they will be arrested soon.
An official said on March 1, constable Ravinder Singh went to fetch medicine from a chemist store in Sohana. When he returned near the gurdwara, he saw a group of youngsters fighting with each other about 9.30am.
He tried to intervene and dissuade them from fighting but the youngsters pounced on him. A youngster hit him with a rod on his head and nose. Another slapped him and following which others started kicking him.
The youngsters left the cop bleeding and no passerby came to the cop’s rescue when he was being thrashed. An official said Ravinder had not made any formal complaint in this regard.
The case was registered only after the video went viral, he said.
